Southern California Businesses Tee Up to Break the Cycle of Child Abuse
There’s an element of magic that happens when caring members of the businesses community come together to stand up against one of society’s toughest issues: child abuse. The magic is in the transformation we see in the hundreds of abused and neglected children who receive our help each year.
“The idea that a child is being abused is unthinkable and, as a community, we can no longer look the other way,” explains Mustard Seed Ranch Founder Tom McCall. “It is our responsibility to protect and care for these children so we can eliminate the destructive and lasting effects of child abuse on our society.”
About one third of abused and neglected children will later victimize their own children, creating a violent cycle of recurring abuse in the U.S.
The 13th Annual Golf For Youth
Last October, the business community rallied together at the Palos Verdes Golf Club for the 13th Annual Golf For Youth. The event sold out and marked MSR’s highest grossing event ever, raising more than $450,000 to support our programs to help youth break the cycle of abuse. As our major annual fundraising effort, Golf For Youth has generated nearly $3.5 million since its inception thirteen years ago.
“It’s the support of the business community and its affinity towards MSR’s mission that has helped the healing work of Mustard Seed Ranch reach more youth,” adds event chair Lenny Fodemski, chief operating officer for Lockton Insurance. “Our overwhelming success is due to the simple fact that people love supporting and being a part of a great cause, that is, helping heal the lives of kids who have suffered abuse.”
Since horses are the heart of MSR’s therapeutic programs, it is only befitting our major fundraiser feature an “Old West” flare with on-course activities such as roping contests and “Hit from the Saddle.” Golf enthusiasts also enjoyed a helicopter ball drop with a cash grand prize of $2,500, followed by a reception, sit-down dinner, entertainment, as well as live and silent auctions. The most coveted auction item, a trip for two to attend the Masters® Golf Tournament in April, was won by bidder Rob Morris. The highlight of the evening was Courtney who shared a poignant story about living with abuse, her personal journey of healing, and how MSR touched her life.
Last year’s Golf For Youth was supported by CLA-VAL as title sponsor, Lockton Insurance Brokers, LLC, R-T Specialty and Cove Programs Insurance Services as presenting sponsors. Ironshore, Philadelphia Insurance, and Pioneer Programs were gracious supporting sponsors. Thanks to these sponsors and all our corporate donors, we are able to improve the availability and quality of our community based programs. In fact, we expanded our reach to kids in Los Angeles County with the opening of our new program location in Pasadena last year.
